Dear Alumni: In wishing you a happy New Year, Protect the Hersheys’ Children Inc. (PHC) respectfully asks you to join us in giving new meaning to this time for re-examination of priorities. Since this not-for-profit corporation is dedicated to the well-being of Milton Hershey School students, the sole heirs of Milton and Catherine Hershey, we regard as critical the restoration of “Hershey trust.” Let’s be clear: we use “trust” in the sense of firm belief in the honesty, integrity, and reliability of another. The absence of trust for the stewards of the Hersheys’ childcare assets, i.e., the MHS Board, must be rectified. Doing so will require involvement of alumni beyond those few who, with personal gain at stake, currently seem determined to keep us divided, waging a misinformation campaign to that end. Whatever you may have heard, we do not seek to “run the school.” But we will continue to pursue MHS Board reform, through the Pennsylvania Attorney General and other elected officials. We will speak out against administrative actions that we feel are a disservice to the Hersheys’ children. We will fight to assure that all MHS land and money are used strictly for MHS children and not for unrelated purposes. We deplore the stifling of informed dissent, as manifest in the shutdown of the MHSAA message forum by those in control and who wish to prevent comment on their conduct. We will not be silent in the face of all this. Fellow alumni, if you approve of our efforts to honor the Hersheys’ legacy by protecting the children named in their Deed of Trust, if you support pursuit of MHS Board reforms that the Attorney General himself ordered before it became inconvenient, if you want alumni to remain true champions of improved MHS childcare, we urge you to send PHC whatever financial assistance you can afford.* Thank you for hearing us out.
